New classification and symptom evaluation of atrial fibrillation based on guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation by the european society of cardiology
Shin Dong-Gu

Abstract
Recently published ¡®Guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation¡¯ by the European Society of Cardiology¡¯s Task Force for the Management of Atrial Fibrillation suggest a new classification scheme for atrial fibrillation based on the presentation and duration of the arrhythmia: first diagnosed, paroxysmal, persistent, long-standing persistent, and permanent atrial fibrillation. This classification scheme is clinically more suitable than the previous ACC/AHA/ESC classification with respect to the management and selection of therapeutic strategies. The task force also adopted a new ¡®EHRA scoring system,¡¯ similar to the NYHA classification for heart failure, to quantify subjective atrial fibrillation-related symptoms. The guidelines will facilitate communication regarding atrial fibrillation, which is particularly important considering its complex and evolving nature.
